This is a privately printed report, and it recreates the first page of William G. Maury’s farm book, a diary that was kept throughout the time of his ownership of the property. Anarcha eventually appears in its pages, as will be described in a later chapter.

There was no official date on which the name of the house changed from Bowling Green to Old Mansion—for several decades the house could be referred to by either name, and this fact was a significant impediment in my search for Anarcha. I had to go to Bowling Green to figure it out—locals were well-acquainted with the history of the house.
