Reliable information about Lewis’s first wife is exceedingly difficult to come by. As this document shows, she died one day after the birth of their third child, a boy who died six months later. I have taken the liberty of suggesting that one of her earlier births was likely difficult as well—which speaks, then, to why Lewis would be drawn to the prospect of acquiring Anarcha, for her skills, as midwife, when he is again contemplating marriage.
