Sims was soon criticized for this account, as will be documented below, and later critics would claim that Sims himself was the one etherizing women to enable intercourse. That’s not true, but it is true that he could and should have related the story with a more vigorous tone of disapproval. His objections were muted, at best—and he was therefore guilty of enabling and amplifying a heinous procedure.
