As appears to have been common, exact figures on the number of deaths at Woman’s Hospital are hard to gauge because of obfuscation and inconsistency on classification of the causes of death—in this case, Harris appears to have ignored the record of Bridget Headley’s death (see “…perform the operation anyway…,” above), and Maria Sharp’s death (see “…Maria Sharp…,” above) went ignored because it was judged that she had arrived too ill to be saved, as the Board of Lady Managers would put it (see below). The case record does not agree with that sentiment.
