Sims’s awards are recorded in many places. As with his award from Belgium, I believe there is reason to doubt some of these awards. For example, Sims received an award from the government of Portugal. I found no evidence that Sims had ever visited Portugal (though it may be possible that he operated on prominent Portuguese citizens in other countries). In any event, I saw no reason to belabor awards that may have dubious purpose, and which may or may not have been awarded.

The nature of this dispute remains mysterious. It may relate to Sims’s ambition as a physician, or to Baldwin’s earlier criticism of Sims’s first infant lockjaw paper. It could also refer to Sims’s partnership in the dispensary co-owned by Baldwin, Sims, and B. Rush Jones. It remains unclear.
