Sims does not attest to this reflection until his medical studies were over, and when he says that he had seen nothing of illness he omits the fact that he has just described watching a good friend die of smallpox.

Cynanche laryngo-trachealis appears to be a form of croup or hives. Sims never mentioned the disease again, and a close medical school friend wrote a thesis on the same subject, as did several others.
