This observation is drawn on interviews and first-hand experience. I visited the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in early 2018, and met a number of the nurse aids who live on the campus of the hospital, in dormitories, or in houses nearby. In addition, there are many nurse aids who work for the hospital who live near Desta Mender—Joy Village—approximately fifteen miles outside of the city. These women work in the village’s café or injera kitchen. I was told by an administrator that there are perhaps as many as 150 nurse aids who are former fistula patients.
